If you’re considering Invisalign in Apex, Cary, or New Hill, Cardinal Family Dentistry is here to help. Dr. Barker has years of experience helping patients straighten their smiles with Invisalign treatments.
To keep our patients informed about this revolutionary orthodontic option, we want to fill you in on a few surprising facts about Invisalign:
Though metal braces and Invisalign are used for the same purpose, their treatment times can differ greatly. Invisalign usually works much more quickly than metal braces. Most patients wear 20-22 sets of aligners, and each set is worn for about 2 weeks. This means that total treatment time is typically just under a year. Of course, this varies based on your particular orthodontic needs, and how diligent you are about wearing your aligners for 22+ hours per day.
In contrast, most adults will wear their braces for at least 18 months, or up to 3 years. This means that some patients can get much faster results using Invisalign.
If you have traditional braces, you’ll need to have them adjusted every 4 weeks, which requires a lengthy appointment at the dentist’s office. Some patients may even need more frequent adjustments, and this can be very inconvenient.
However, with Invisalign you typically only need to have an oral exam about every 6 weeks. This exam is short and simple. At the end of the exam, Dr. Barker will provide you with 3 more sets of aligners, which you’ll wear according to her instructions.
This adds up to much less time in the dentist’s chair!
If you wear traditional braces while you play any kind of contact sport like football, soccer, or hockey, you’ll need special mouthguards to protect your teeth during the game. This can be expensive, and these mouthguards are not always comfortable.
With Invisalign, you don’t need a special mouthguard to play contact sports. Simply pop out your aligners, wear your normal mouthguard, and get back into the action!
Braces can have a serious impact on your ability to enjoy your favorite foods, crunchy foods like popcorn, chewy foods like gum and caramels, and hard foods like nuts and pretzels.
But Invisalign has no food restrictions. Just take your aligners out, and eat whatever you want! Then, brush your teeth and clean your aligners. That’s all there is to it!
